Teacher Liu

Overnight rain has washed the streets clean of the brown pollen from a few days ago. Some early morning forms at Westlake and we met Teacher Liu at the hotel. Kevin Hu was there to help us communicate with Teacher Liu and we walked a short distance to a community centre where we were met by Lin Guoqing, a Disciple of Master Li who knew us from the Xixi Wetlands retreat.

The days Push Hands lesson went from 9am to 5 pm with a break for lunch. A review of what we had done before, with more detail. The major theme was to yield, taking away the opponents force, creating all movement from the waist. To attack start second but finish first, fast as lightning, faster than the blink of an eye.

Sunny Sunday

Quiet at our morning practice area on Sunday morning. more tourists than Tai Chi. Lots of young tourists taking photos of us and imitating our warmup exercises. A little cooler today with a breeze but in the bright sunshine it was warm enough. The breeze brought out kites. The photo doesn’t catch most of them, only the near ones, there was about 20 kites in view.

We spent the day exploring another part of town and found lots of public street art depicting historic events and cultural scenes from daily life. The streets were packed with young people and family groups. There is a festival this weekend which celebrates older family members and dead ancestors.

More great food including noodles for lunch served cold.

Early Start

Saw some great sword forms in the park early in the morning. We practiced forms for about an hour and attracted a few onlookers. Another pedestrian adventure finding our way around, exploring shops.

I had excellent noodles for lunch but Kieran got a huge surprise with his point and shoot method of choosing from a menu board. He managed to select a bowl of mixed sea monsters in garlic, ginger and chilli soup which was big enough for 4 people.

Late afternoon there was a sudden storm of fluffy brown flower pollen falling from trees. People everywhere were covered in it, trying to keep it out of their eyes and nose.

Tourist Shopping

Beautiful, sunny, jeans and T shirt weather exploring on foot for bits and pieces to make our stay more comfortable. By the time we stopped for spicy noodles by a canal for lunch we had found everything we needed except a beanie for Kieran, who had fun miming a knitted beanie in various hat shops. We were interviewed on the street for a student project about tourism. They were surprised at the places we have been, some they didn’t know about!

Spring Blossoms

Arrived safe and well after a long but uneventful day of transit. This morning was a late start  but we emerged to a beautiful morning. Spring is here well and truly with flowers blooming everywhere, birds singing in the trees. Bright sunny morning but quite cool. Coffee and eggs for breakfast outdoors at the YHA Ming Town Cafe. Looking forward to a rest day exploring and collecting supplies.

All classes resume normal times

Withe the summer holidays over and the school year started, all classes are back on with no changes to the timetable or prices.

Step back and ride the tiger.

Blue sky and sunshine for a walk in the Xixi Wetlands Park there were groups of flag waving tourists already celebrating tomorrows Peoples Day (China Day) national holiday.
We went to the Western side of the Park where an old building museum is under construction. A bit like a housing estate full of stone mansions from the Ming and Qing Dynasty.
Our afternoon training was with Octogenarian 5th Generation Masters Ding and Yen. We demonstrated sword and short form. Ding performed section 1&2 of the long form. Yen performed a unique form using an umbrella as a weapon. Also a young student of Ding performed sword. With only 2 years training she is very skilled. Demonstration of push hands exercises followed.
As Kieran and Stephen return home tomorrow, we had a banquet with the Director and staff of the Hall of Heroes in the courtyard pagoda, surrounded by images of the legendary 108 Heroes. The atmosphere was high in energy, and as we left there were fireworks in the distance. Carol, Jan, Wayne and John are staying for another 4 days of training.
Step back while drawing down with the right then pivot while drawing down with the left.

Part the Wild Horse's Mane

More perfect weather for training today and another lesson from Teacher Liu. Review of the push hands exercises done earlier in the week, and some new lessons on breathing, stepping, looking, and attitude. Teacher Liu has been very generous with the information he has shared and we look forward to incorporating it into our practice.
At a banquet lunch to thank Teacher Liu, he made a gift of a needlepoint tapestry depicting a classical Chinese image captioned "Success Immediately Upon Arrival." Teacher Liu's wife worked for more than 40 hours to create the tapestry.
Pull down while stepping forward and turn while pushing with the shoulder.
